A Study of the Need for Basic Core Competence of an Optometrist

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the need for basic core competencies for an optometrist and present basic data for the development of an efficient curriculum.
Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted with 209 students in ophthalmic optics and optometrists and was analyzed statistically.
Results: The need for basic core competencies of the optometrists (4.09±0.66) was higher than that of the students (4.06±0.68). In general, the need for communication, vocational ethics, and emotional intelligence was high, and the need for a global mind was low. Significant differences were found between the two groups in terms of collaboration, communication, and resource control needs (p<0.05). In the current optometrist, the need for basic core competencies for male (4.13±0.72) was higher than that for female (4.08±0.52), and the need for communication, vocational ethics, and collaboration was higher in all age groups. There was a significant difference according to gender in the need for creativity (p<0.05). In current students, the need for basic core competencies for female (4.15±0.64) was higher than that for male (3.92±0.71), and there was a statistically significant difference in collaboration, interpersonal relationship, self-control, and development needs (p<0.05). By grade, the need for basic core competencies was the highest in the second grade, and significant differences were found in collaboration, interpersonal relationship, resource control, self-control, and development needs (p<0.05). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between basic core competency needs (p<0.001).
Conclusion: To strengthen the competency of an optometrist, it is necessary to develop and improve a curriculum that reflects the needs of basic core competencies for optometrists and students.
